For the PP folks who were there that day and for anyone else interested in a bit of carnage....

Trip Report (with link to video):

Video Only: (takes a little while to start -- I don't know why)

Trip report is a bit long (sorry) - you may want to grab a beverage for that.  Video is just under 6 min.

Say what you like about Leif, but being in a kayak on a steep narrow river like that with all those bulldozers with 9 foot oars sticking out bearing down on you takes some nuts.

Nice work on the TR Shelly.

Agreed.  Although I would feel pretty safe in other ways with that many rafts.  A raft can be your best friend when swimming!!!

Nice trip report. After seeing a couple of your videos and comparing them to kayak head cams, I must say I much prefer watching your vids. I get a much better perspective on rapids, and you don't seem to get water droplets stuck on the lens. Very pretty place.

Awesome. A refreshing change from the clicheic soundtracks of many paddling videos these days.

Man it was a lot lower than when we ran it. Most of those midstream boulders were covered over pretty well when we were there (2200-2500 cfs?).

Superbowl looked a lot more manageable in your vid, but still quite gnarly.

It sounded like you guys had a LOT more water.  I would like to see it a little higher but not so high that Superbowl and Broken Paddle are portages.

I tried to get at least one shot of everyone in the video. Generally speaking, to be in the video you had to be boating close to Dave.  As Joe pointed out earlier, that would have been a bad idea for people in small boats - sometimes it's even a bad idea for me and my boat is the same size .  There was a little bit more footage of Leif but he was a teeny tiny speck (helmet cams need some kind of zoom).

Dave should get a lot of credit for his helmet cam work, he has learned over this past year how to boat Class IV-V without moving his head much and how to wipe the lens mid-rapid when most of us are just thinking about making the line.  He says he enjoys the challenge.  All of the footage at SB except for Dave's run came from the helmet cam because our tape camcorder refused to work.

Nice work Guys!  After the high water run, everything was a bit of a blur, but your video really helped me to put it all back together in my head.

p.s. you should post your trip report on the grays river page in this site, and preserve if for all eternity, or at least make it available for people looking for a little beta. I have found trip reports (especially as detailed as yours) to be very useful when trying to get an idea of what to expect on a new run.

I'm more than happy to share.  I posted the TR here in the Trip Reports section and link to the video.  The Grays ran over 12,000 cfs shortly after we ran so there could be some new changes again.  --Shelly
