Not sure. Maybe it was in that book. Come to think of it, My Dad may have had that book, because when I went and ran the C Frk of the Y (The same section-The Box), he seemed to know an awful lot about the "First D".
Just a point of clarification though as it pertains to this thread:
While the attempts in the 70's undoubtedly were in fiberglass boats, thie trip described with Yvon Chinard, Doug Tompkins, Lesser, Lake, ect. was paddled in plastic boats.
In fact a recent edition of Kayak Session shows a great photo of them at the T.O. w/ their boats, and, heh hee- Doug Tompkins is displaying his huevos rather dramaticly (rightfully so)!
That issue of KS is greta, BTW. Made me homesick for that canyon. The best collection of photos I'd ever seen of it, not to mention some great detail in the article about the various early trips in there.
I ran it in the mid 90's as some of the early waves of people started following on the coat tails of the T.L.'s who had figured the run out. Guy Herb in particular was my T.L. the times I ran it, along with Bozo Cardozo of Idaho fame.
Good times. Also some of the more horrific things I've witnessed befall other paddlers-ever.
