This is the FITW snowshoe first trip of the season discussion thread. Please post any questions below.

Remember the actual Trip Details are located on the FITW snowshoe first trip of the season | Trip Page

I will probably get yelled at for this, but I was hoping to get up to FITW and do a fun snowshoe circuit workout at one of our favorite creek runs. There should be enough snow to do it on Friday. Tell me what you guys think?

HMMM, posting snowshoe trip at a kayaking spot on a kayaking website? I am going to get into trouble aren't I?

Hey, some cat posted last spring that there is a short gorge above FITW proper.  I've always been too lazy to get out of the rig and poke around and this weekend will be no different.  Any chance ya'll want to confirm his claim?

Ya, the short gorge is where we go snowshoeing in. It is a lot of fun and we jump from one side to the other. Been doing it for years now when there is enough snow. Only D1 and Fish have fallen in so far. Bring a throw bag!

So is it worth boating as a starting point above FITW iyo?

Hiked out to Snow Lake yesterday snow conditions were very nice.
Lief ,  what do you think of going iceclimbing this week?
Liz,  can iceclimbing tools be borrowed where you work?
Meghan, I would say "no"  It would be major bushwacking.just ask James. Though there is a wild looking 40 to 50ft slide up there with drops just above an below the main drop.
Dave, getting your toes wet is not falling in.Unlike Fish who went for a major jump and ended up doing the backstroke in one  of the pools.

Hey dave - I'd love to do some ice climbing, though I have never done it before and have little experience.  I have some heavy mountaineering boots and crampons, but no ice axe...

Like Dave said, the upper FITW area might have some boatable stuff in it, but there is very little chance that it would be running when FITW is in. I would think you would need FITW around the 1200 - 1800 level for that upper stuff to have enough water. Were basically talking about the very top of the drainage.

Anything compared to Fish's dive would be considered a damp walk in the park. You just can't compare getting your tootsies wet with a 30 ft swan dive into a deep pool, followed by a little treading water with snowshoes on!!!! I still don't really understand how fish figured he would stay dry off that hop, but hey it was the best show yet!!!! (If the name fits, wear it right!)

Also just fyi, the circuit does not require any jumping or wicked stunts. You can take it as high, or wet as you like, but you can always walk around the jumps and stay dry!!!

When there is enough snow that is James. The first time up for the year is always an exploritory run, cause you never know how deep the snow is going to be unil you get there. Bring headlamps and we will have fun no matter what.

ya know, I'd rather paddle, but based on the way the weather may be, I'm interested!
Liz, I don't have snowshoes anymore, so in order to go I may have to take you up on your offer!

Parking has become a little tricky in the past few years. But, I think we should initially meet right under the I90 overpass (exit the freeway towards FITW then pull over under the freeway) figure out where to park afterwards. Meet around 7pm?

Dave, honestly the best bet is to meet in northbend to consolidate into less vehicles. The parking up there is slim, so if 4 or 5 trucks show up it could get tight, unless the ski hills are closed, then it would probably be fine.

I might head up tonight to go poach the stash before all you yahoos start googlin on the goods!!!

:)

Ok so I officially signed up for the trip. It is however contingent on being able to carpool up from Seattle with soemone, and borrowing snowshoes from Liz.
Here's my # for all on the world wide web to see...

 didn't think so.

First of all James has a good Idea about meeting at North Bend.We could all meet at the Gas station across from MacDonalds (where they filmed the vanishing)around 6:30pm or so?

Second, this is a really safe area and has no big hills around and is also in the trees, so it is very avalanche safe.

Third, James needs to come with us! He is so much fun to have when your up there, plus he really gets you going when you are scared or getting tired (like a cheerleader!)

fourth, this could count as a day on the river or a day in the river if you fall in!

I have room for three people (total of 4) in my 4x4 Nitro wich does well in the snow if people want to meet at North bend and carpool.

Exit 31 on wa 202. Right across the street from the factory stores at north bend. I think it is a shell station.

Its right on the corner
