Curious about the Expert Whitewater Open Class. What's the deal w/ scoring, is it going to be as unprogressive as the Santa Cruz Comp or does this competition actually recognize not only a difference in performance capabilities between surf and whitewater boats but also a need for a difference in scoring for whitewater boats favoring current aerial manuevering thus encouraging that progression of the sport. If people want to surf the line they would be in a surf kayak, whitewater boats are made for getting air down the face.
Bottom line: Will whitewater boaters get points for panam's, helixes, backstabs, etc if they are unable to reattain the green afterwards?
Sounds like an awesome event, I'll definetly be there to check it out especially if whitewater boaters are scored in a manner encouraging progression of the big wave aspect of the sport.

paul,
thanks for your comments. per scoring, since we are volunteers with little time on our hands, the basics of putting a comp like this together can be complex, no matter how large or small. we got overwhelmed last year trying to do it right with no prior experience with this type of event. finding qualified judges or training new ones is quite a project in itself.
that said, this is a non sanctioned event, scoring will be even much less progressive than sc. it'll resemble more of a expression session with light judging, but less about hard competition, more about fun. expect categories such as best wipeout, most spins, best swim, most air, best gymnastic move, etc. for us, it's about fun and friends, and meeting new folks and sharing the laid back hobuck spirit. also in reality, when one sets a date for a surf comp, there's no gurantees of wave size. be prepared to shred even if it's 2-3'. :)
at least be glad we don't call ww boats, 'Production Plastic' as they do in sc.
whilst i agree there should be a more competitive comp in the NW with true scoring, we're not the ones to do it. westport might be a more appropiate locale for that sort of event.
i don't check this forum often, so contact us through the email on the site for quicker response. www.hobuckhowdown.com.
hope to see ya out there!

Awesome thanks for the info. Glad to you see the difference in Whitewater boats vs surf boats in terms of scoring....really think the SC comp has it out for the whitewater boaters.
Totally agree that scoring a surf comp like this isn't an easy job. We have a "Big Air" surf comp in Northern California every year where we just basically do the same style it sounds like you have here.
Anyway way sounds like it'll be a cool event I'll try and check it out.

It is really too bad the PP ball and the Hoedown ended up being on the same weekend. We will have to try to coordinate next year...

as in any event coordinating, you can't win them all. what the two events at the same time do offer is a choice for folks to do either. maybe get a break from the river and head to the coast, or vice versa! it's nice to have options.
we will try to have more surf kayak options throughout the year to keep the momentum up. possibly an expression session in the fall at westport or ocean shores.

Hobuck Hoedown...
Come on out to Neah Bay to check out the surf. We have the 2007 Worlds Surf Kayak Champ Sean Morley coming up from the Bay area with Valley surf kayaks to demo, as well as Mega boats from a local dealer.

Yeah, It's tempting to blow off the PP Ball and check that out on the coast, I've been wanting to for a while. (Actually I guess I'm thinking of the LaPush Pummel). Hoebuck Beach is awesome, however, and I do plan on paddling out there this year!! But for now, my attentions will be on the Eastside...
