Having boated for 13 years...I have to say that is one tradition I find utterly disgusting.  In my circles if you swim...you buy beer for the rest of the crew.  I would rather drink free beer than watch someone drink out of a bootie.  A much better tradition in my opinion.

Exactly.  The crew I started boating with did the same thing.
 
Drinking free beer seems a lot more fun than watching someone do something disgusting for two minutes
