Heh heh, ya it was at 1,500, it was easy, and I'll never run it again after finding out about the "hazards".

Flow makes all the difference! I thought Fish to Bob's on the Clackamas couldn't get super challenging, normaly class III-III+, until I ran it at over 14,000 cfs one winter...Carter's rapid was HUGE!!!

How about Satan's Little Friend on the UU MF Snoqualmie. It's more or less a big slide, but there are palces to be and not.

Or, how about the one rapid that makes people think twice about doing a run - maybe even keeps people off an otherwise great run.
My vote: Rick's Slide. Not that big, but...

I am Confucius and I have come to this place to share my wisdom and also to learn the wisdom of the great one called Professor Paddle. The Superior man sees the river as a constant factor in time and space thus making any class V a class II and visa versa. Therefore only your mind and the power within oneself can ultimately decide the difficulty of any given rapid.
I shall post again and look forward to seeing you on the river.

So this either falls under that it's an unportageable drop and have to run it or you want to clean the run and wait till you have the confidence/abilities to do so? One that comes to mind for me is Entrance Falls on Vallecito Creek in Colorado.

hourglass rapid on Eagle Creek. No portage...you can scout, but it won't do any good..you can see the big lead in hole and the violent crashing reaction waves coming off the walls and then the pinch at the bottom as it turns the corner....still white and dropping!

Fish, I think I would say Root Ball although a fairly straighforward drop by itself definitely has class 5 consequence at medium levels and downright scary at high water.

Great thread here ... I was holding off since pro and solid V opinions were solicited, but we seem far enough off that topic that I'll throw a couple things out.
I don't consider myself a V boater, more a low water boater that occasionally dips into the IV-V runs. But my favs among the harder things I've run are
McCoy Ohane Truss Cooper
My favorite V-ish drops: Double Drop, Truss Box Drop, Tye every inch of the cooper
And how about a new category: favorite waterfalls! Chinook Falls, McCoy Big Brother, Truss Wishbone, LWS
And one more silly one: easiest rapids you've portaged. Even though you know you can run them, something just sketches ya ... Sidewinder, Farmlands Last Nasty, Sultan

Oh, I can totally get into the portaging thread, I know all about walking rapids.
Last Nasty is only easy on the right bank, (the left is heinous)
Screaming Left EF Lewis.
Prethrasher and Thrasher on CC
Favorite Waterfalls,
BK CC Lewis
Sunset, EF Lewis and Horseshoe (trying to get the weekend stoke on)
You gotta love Husom?

This is a great thread! I like the way it's developed.
Note: I am a weekend class V boater at best so some of my choices may not be considered class V by other boaters. I've also yet to run Little White or Robe Canyon so I know I'm missing some good ones.
Instead of "Best" I'll go with Favorite Class V, only I can't pick just one:
Double Drop on the White Salmon
Log Boof on the Ohane (hey, it's odd but it's fun!)
Summit Creek on the Ohane
Right line on POW on Tumwater at <1200 (prior to this year)
Favorite waterfalls:
Big Brother on the White Salmon
Behemoth on UU Cispus
Scariest Rapids (I've always taken the dry line on these):
Last Drop above Franklin on FITW (below Root Ball)
BZ Falls on the White Salmon still scares me even though it's very straight forward
Exit on Tumwater
Favorite Runs:
Green Truss - White Salmon
Clearwater Creek
Canyon Creek - EF Lewis (not really a V but really fun)
Cooper on a sunny day with good water (also not really a V)
Favorite Rapid I've ever run. This one isn't in WA but I had to give it props:
Plastic Surgery on South Silver Creek in CA
I'm sure I'm forgetting all kinds of rapids and runs. Bottom line: It's ALL fun!

Whatever kyle, Clearwater sucks. No good. Do not waste your time by boating this creek. Just flatwater interrupted by mank.... yeah right, my top two runs are Robe and Clearwater. Number three is a toss up...nf nookie (the bend), upper chilliwack (the canyon), top tye...icicle...callaghan...upper cheak...birkenhead...thunder...oh shit, it goes on and on.

My vote is on ricochet, not a cleaner longer class V. Run it countless times from a trickle up to a flow that I would rather forget, but its all good on the cicle.

Yeah Jon, you're right, it does go on and on! I forgot about Top Tye, also one of my fav's. Haven't run anything else up Clearwater way or in C-eh-N-eh-D-eh so can't comment but they all look awesome from pics and posts.
Frankly, I haven't run all that many runs multiple times, or even all that many runs at all, although I have explored a bit in Californicatia and Montucky. Like I said, I am a weekend warrior at best. Fatherhood and a very busy work schedule and, um, er, nerves have kept me off some of the classics. I like a good adrenalin rush with my whitewater (always with big respect to the rio!) but I prefer not to be completely terrified.
Oh yes, another always portage, scares me big time, rapid is Elbow Room on the Ohane.
My goal is to get on the Little White in 2008. If that happens I'll be pretty thrilled.
PS: Have we ever met?

Um...how 'bout that lil' ol' Fork of the Cowlitz that's Clear? I'm shocked that a thread about WA's best class V hasn't mentioned this gem of a gem. Granted, last years floods weren't that kind to the ol' girl, but she's still a high-quality piece of...whitewater. 5 miles of steep creeking in a beautiful & committing gorge. Falls, big ledges, boofs, grinds, boulder-gardening. It had my #1 spot, until The Robe version 2007 came on board.
Entrance Exam? I ran it blind on beta my first time on CFC, and it's one of the scariest things I've done in a kayak. Like a smaller version of Wall Drug on Tatlow, with two big ledges right below.
Ricochet cetainly deserves a nod for "best class V rapids". I will say, I always catch eddies in there (usually 3) so it kind of breaks it up a bit, and doesn't always feel like one "rapid".
Clearwater simply has to be on the list of best class V runs as well.
I'm also going to plug my favorite little gem up I-90...Franklin Falls section below FITW? When clean, it's a pretty packed stretch and totally worth it. Has anyone looked too see if it's clean of wood? Was a bit choked last year. It has a great one-two punch with Superboof & The 20 footer just below. Z-turn is full on, and the double butt-crack ledge below that is so much fun when you hit it. You boof & land in a 5 foot wide crack...don't land sideways. Also, don't forget about the section of The SF Snoq below Denny Creek CG down to I-90. When FITW is high (too high?) check that section out. There are some fun rapids in there. I always wanted to do 90-90, but have never been able to put that together. Put-in @ I-90 (FITW put-in), take-out I-90 at Exit 47. You want high water, but not too high where The Franklin Section gets a bit out of hand.
Ernies might need to be on this list, but I honestly can't say as my only run through there had me so scared, I barely remember anything.
Anyways, great thread, but somewhat subjective. Makes you realize how much great whitewater paddleboating there is in this state of WA.
What about the possibility of high-quality WA class V that is (mostly) unknown? I've heard rumblings about The Upper Queets & Upper Hoh having some burl? I'm sure there's some quality still waiting to be discovered in The OP. Then there's that stuff around Chelan...Agnes, Railroad, Company, others?
~SYOTMFR~
p.s. one more nod for Thunder...WA's new high-quality IV-V late season classic. Runs into September.

I hoped someone would list the C.F.C.
It falls in the favorite single day trips of all time for me instead of local favorites.
Entrance Exam blind? Nice! wish I hadn't looked at it my first time down!

I have done Super Slides, so it isn't a true class V. Class III moves with class V consiquences.

Thought I should throw in a few from afar...
Best falls: Behemouth on UUCispus (the best, biggest boof around), Wishbone on LWS (beautiful drop into such a perfect pool), Husum Falls (how many waterfalls have you run more than 100 times?) Best rapid: Righty Tighty (the series below Behemouth with perfect boofs, a big wall slide and great view from the bottom), Gettin' Busy on LWS, Zig-Zags on Truss (perfect canyon with huge holes and big moves, 3feet+) Best portage: Big Brother above 3.25 feet
Thanks to CRG for repin the Gorge while I'm out in Peru/ Chile...
Peace RS.
Sorry to hear about your rotator James, maybe a trip to
Costa in March would do you well?
