Am I just completely missing something, or have they pretty much stopped making real paddling gear?!

they were bought out by patagonia years ago...apparently they made some deal with the founder that he had to stay out of the paddling gear business for so many years...that time ended when he founded Astral.....

I can't say enough good things about my lotus drytop. It keeps me bone dry and is super breathable.

Just buy Kokatat. It will last forever. Or IR if you want to save some dough.
What could possibly go wrong?

I second this motion.  You'd be crazy to buy Lotus at this point.  Maybe if you could find a new 5 year old drytop, that would be good (cause its from before they started sucking), but now they make crap.

I've got an IR top, but when I got it, I had no idea what the difference between semi-dry and drytops was. I was 15? So, I'm taking on water faster than a sponge when I flip.

And yeah, Patagonia's stuff is crap right now, I wouldn't even buy a PFD from them at this point.

Opinions on Stohlquist? Palm?

The IR DRY tops are really good,
I own a Palm drysuit and I love it,, I am not sure if they make dry tops??
I would steer clear of NRS dry tops,, mine is delaminating after a year and a half.
Sure?

Really? That sucks. My Lotus Rio Grande is my favorite PFD I've ever owned... and I've had a quite a few. There's not really much out there in a low profile PDF with more than the standard 16 lbs of flotation... and I like a little more to float my big ass. Is the PFD Patagonia makes now not as good as when Lotus was making them?

Yeah... I've got to assume that Patagonia isn't doing the exact same thing. Not to say that there PFD's aren't good for what they are intended for, but I think they're big, ugly and bulky. I have one of Lotus' PFD's from 5 of 6 years ago, and I love it. I Think most of Patagonia's stuff now is made for touring, etc.

I still think Patagonia's fleece is the nicest , softest and coziest!    Their paddling gear is now for the herd though.  I've heard Patagonia be called Patagucci before!!

Patagonia aka, patagucci was originally a great company, founded by Yvon Chouinard, to compete with Royal Robbins in the climbing clothing area. It grew way to big, or should I say was accepted by REI? Either way it is not the same company. Patagonia also used to be coveted by surfers, Mr. Chouinard took up surfing about hte same time he started the company and wrote a couple good books on the parallel between climbing and surfing.
The original Chouinard company became Black Diamond, and has actually become a better gear maker for climbers. That doesn't happen to often, but I guess there isnt a huge market for just making hard goods?
North Face used to be a great soft  good company, it gobbled up A-5 and followed the same track as many of our favorite small gear makers!
Can you say Jackson/ Wave Sport?
Sure?
