Anyone have 2 cents to spare?

Do the pros of ripping out your boats bulkhead and replacing it with foam outweigh the headache involved?

Is the weight really that different when you have 16 inches of foam up there? Is it worth it? Anybody kitted out their sick-ass Mambas with foam?

If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.

Dude nobody comes round here nomore- just look at my threads-twenty posts of me having a convo w/ myself. How are you today, jP? Pretty good, jP howbouchu?...was it something I said? Everything I said? Megan and Joe and Irene chime in once in awhile so I can save face but you know when I come along you're bound to get buried beneath a dumptruck full of pennies. fu*kin sh*t costs more to produce than its worth!

Haha seriously though- why do you want to? Weight savings?
I hate to say it but I'm just not as opinionated as I used to be. #Lie

When I got the Shiva I took Darren's advice and taped the handles of two milk jugs together and jammed them in front of my bulkhead for floatation/filler. Not sure about the results or if that adressed your (?) Prolly leaks by now tho so maybe thats an unwanted weight INCREASE.

Without *literally* weighing both alternatives on a scale hard to tell. I bet its negligible and I am starting to get less motivated each time so I don't think its worth the hassle. I had a good ten year streak where I could entertain myself for awhile trash talking the failings of these boats outfitting, but since 2011 I've had to shut up about that because the average boat is pretty damn sophisticated.

I guess it comes down to the needs of high impact stress? I'm definitely more concerned about weight since I be portaging anything requiring more rigorous impact standards.

What are the bro bras saying who foam sh*t out?

If I was gonna undertake such a project I would do a cross hatch of one inch thick strips over laid and stacked to give you some shock absorption but i love to bear down on my boat when I paddle and push hard at times w/ my feet so my question is if you'd end up w/ the equivilent of those shocks on bike seats when you see some gaper riding a mtn bike hard down mainstreet, ass bouncing up and down- lots of energy lost there in that seat post shock. Anyway I saw that cross hatch idea on you tube and admired it. The cross hatch strips of minicel were glued to...mighta been two layers of 3" cant remember. If only you could do it as fast as the guy in the video! He must be one of those guys I see in all those kayak videos- how do those guys walk so damn fast all the time? I must be gettin old.

Well prolly doesnt even adress your question. Good luck digging out from under them pennies

Dan, what's the point? Just buy the non creeker Mamba and that's got the foam instead of the plastic.
I'm assuming you are paddling an 8.6.....the Creeker Mamba weighs 51 lbs and the Mamba (with foam) weighs 50 lbs on this year's models. So about a weight difference of 1 lb. And less work for you! Just keep being your awesome self and get the Mamba river runner next year!!

JP you are hilarious! Facebook is great and all, but people are bigger jerks on there unless the moderators step in. But if you are on FB, you better add me :)
I still love PP by the way!

I love it. I didn't know the other Mamba had a foam bulkhead. Interesting.

Yup, that's the only difference between the two boats really. The hull is exactly the same. Just the seat and the foam vs. plastic pillar outfitting is the difference. I think there is a slight cost variant too....the river runner is about 100/150 cheaper than the creeker version.

I've been having an ongoing whine about the weight of my Recon 93. I think it paddles just fine, but carrying it is awful. I took all of the outfitting out, and it weighed in at ~9lb. Most of the weight comes from the seat and the metal bars for the footrests.

There were some recommendations to try drilling things out and removing other things, but frankly even if I was really aggressive with that I doubt I'd save more than 2lb. I've decided to just keep up my whining and not really do anything about the weight.

I'm going to try and clear up some things. First, Dan is speaking about a bulk head but pillar. The river runner mamba has a foam pillar and regular foot brace/bulkhead. Second, don't do it Dan. An adjustable non foam bulkhead is way better. Take it from a tall guy who used to have to fit boats this way in the before times. You want a bulkhead.

Even if you never change it?

Yeah, sorry for the confusion.
First; I know exactly how handsome JP is and all I can say it Hellz Yes.
Second; I am referring to the bulkhead specifically.

So, over the weekend I pulled out the bulkhead. Then I gathered a rough approximation of the required amount of foam needed. Utilizing the latest and greatest science, I held them in opposite hands and while my paper is not published yet, I'm not sure there was a significant difference in weight.

Please note that I am short. There was a lot of foam.
