Topic: Cispus upper upper? Posted: 01 Jun 2015 at 2:42pm |
Ran what I think was the upper upper today. From NF21 to the fr23 bridge. Not sure if it was the entire run or?

If you put in at the NF and paddled to the FR23 bridge, you were paddling upstream. You must be a stud!

Not too sure. Took out at fr-23 bridge after putting in from nf-21. Took a left onto nf-21 from nf-23 and went several miles then drug down to the river from a spur road off right.

Went through a good long gorge that started in a 8ft drop pushing left with a solid hole at the bottom

Yeah, definitely sounds like you ran the upper upper. Did you run Behemoth? That would be a good pretty hard to miss and be a good indicator.

Not sure. Couple of sack tightening drops in there. None of which looked like any videos i watched last night.
One such drop i thought was behemoth but felt like it kicked right more than any footage ive seen and had less boil than the video ive seen of travismo in there.

The hole after the big drop is what gave me doubt i might have pulled out early. I read behemoth has a cave of river left. But i didnt see that, and the room between the biggest drop and the hole just after wasnt too wild, the hole after wasnt as dramatic either. It was a hell of a stretch though! Pretty sure i grew some hair on my chest in there.

Behemoth does kick right, I think my video is a lot higher than now so it would look different.
At high water there is a serious pull on the left that pulls boaters better than me behind the falls. Not really a cave, more an eddy that sucks you back and behind.
In the video I purposely plugged the right to avoid being sucked in. This unfortunately blew my skirt
The only plus of plugging was little chance of going out of the punch bowl. I was right but it was unpleasant with a boat full of water!
Was there a small ledge on the left after a difficult stretch from which it was nearly impossible to avoid running the falls? Only Behemoth has that distinction. If you saw the falls before running it, you would've been there!

wow, that would be freaky alone!
old trip normal flows
Don't pay much attention to the flow listed, the gauge broke once and the flows seem much different now. I suspect your flow was similar (a bit higher though) to the pics, look more like it?

Haha! Also thanks for asking the question, reading that report reminded me of that trip!
I made a helmet cam with a battery pack under my skirt, a bullet cam on my head and one rca cable that fed a camcorder behind my seat.
I need to convert to digital...
I knocked it off my head n broke the bullet cam that day. Never used it after :P

It was scary. Im just tired of wasting, day or weeks waiting to paddle and then not progressing. You do what you can with whats flowing I suppose.
Ive been feeling good about my forward stroke & after a buddy bailed on me I decided to go for it.
And yeah it did actually look like the pics! That small ledge on river left sticks out too.

Upper upper & upper both worth the drive! UU doesnt seems like a perfect level, and managed not to scrape on the upper.

I think you were on the upper and lower. Unless you ran a thirty foot drop and sort of forgot about it along with a couple other mentionable rapids upstream. The eight footer was likely a sloped white lightening. Adams fork is the traditional put in for the upper upper. You would have known it if you were on there.

46.341654, -121.673043 this is what I had saved to maps on my phone & right about where I found a spur road leading into what looked like an area people have camped in, with an easy hike down to the river.

Here is Behemoth
If you put in at the coordinates you listed, you put in above Island Drop and would've run Behemoth. I suspect you put in somewhere downstream from the campsite since even Island drop is pretty memorable.

its a double drop right?, with like a ridge of rocks leading up to a big island that splits the right & left? And the left sides a bad idea cause it shoves you into the flow from the right?

Yes. Both sides can be run. Looks like you boosted off behemoth like a speed bump with nary a second thought. Cool. There shouldn't be any lack of flow in there right now.

This whole bit is inane. With all the resources available to us, there is no excuse for not knowing what section you're on. You don't need a gopro with somebody to show you down. You need a map and maybe the WA guidebook, or just look it up on this site or AW. There is no mystery to the UUCispus as you create. Sorry if this is harshing on your mellow.

Not at all, more realistically I tried to come off as more mellow than necessary, since every time previously on PP I've tried to boast I've gotten equally as much blow back. I didnt have anyone to reference beta from, & somewhere in the past two weeks lost my bennett book, but did scout half a dozen spots along NF-21 and then decided to finally put in where it seemed obvious & easiest.
Lack of regard for safety is a personal issue & not one I excersize among a group, alas that issue goes hand in hand with my inability to ever find a paddling partner, since I started paddling & since I joined PP.
So again my mistake for playing stupid, hoping to gain some notoriety, & fostering trying to glorify stumbling upon a big run half assed & going for it.
I was aware of what possibly lie in wait just not all the logistics, guess im just alienating myself more.
