Water is being released out of the Chelan this year on two days only. The current schedule is Sept 15 and Sept 16.

Check this page for more details. http://www.chelanpud.org/whitewater-boating.html

Don't forget you have to sign up for the boating ahead of time and there is a minimum number of paddlers required for each release.

I plan on being out there for the chelanigans this year for sure!

Oh and one other note.

All boaters must be at least 18 years of age and are required to pre-register and complete the reservation process. Only non-motorized hard-shelled kayaks or inflatables suitable for Class V whitewater and approved by American Whitewater in consultation with Chelan PUD will be allowed. Public access to this area is limited at all times due to hazardous terrain. Visitors are reminded to adhere to posted restrictions.

Just a heads up. I personally think it would be awesome if either Fish, Brian (SlickHorn) or Joe would be willing to take an IK down the run. To my knowledge it has not been done in an Inflatable and it would be great if the PUD could have record and responses back from IKers.

After three years of conducting flow studies, we finally have a formal release thanks to Tom and others at American Whitewater.   I'm excited to see everyone come out this year and support the first formal Chelan Gorge release here in Washington.

Inflatables ARE allowed in the Gorge now that the flow study is done, although honestly the thought of IK'ing Entrance Exam scares the hell outta me, I may bring it just in case.

For those that have never been to the Chelanigans Gorge releases, come out and enjoy some bath temp Class V whitewater in 95 degree heat,  its a great experience!   All rapids can easily be walked by those just wishing to experience the gorge and witness some memorable action 10 minutes from Downtown lake Chelan.

OH HELL YES!

I got injured and had to miss the releases last year. Thought there might never be another chance to run the Chelan. Here's a huge shout-out to all who worked to secure ongoing releases.

Whichever bar Fish or Tiziak are at on Saturday night!
The canyon rim above Entrance Exam seems to be a popular place for the dam employees during releases

And the group can spend an hour plus there as people look, ponder and run it one at a time.

So is the release day open to everyone or is there a limit on the number of boaters allowed?

There's no upper limit to people on the water. Just a minimum. But, common sense needs to make an appearance... Watch the videos and read the descriptions of the rapids. If you're ready, come on out and have a blast. The bars are terrible though, so all this talk of "fun" is completely unfounded. It's a very somber experience off the water.
If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.
