Hey everyone!

There's a kayak rescue course being offered through Wave Trek Rescue coming up on November 7th & 8th. I know there's a lot of people who are stepping it up, including myself or those who may be rusty on your skills... This class is a great opportunity for us to practice rescue techniques that will benefit everyone when the situation arises!

It' will be a great course! Check it out!

I agree, I took this course in the spring when AquaSports organized it, it was great - Chris is a really good teacher and it also taught me what a crappy swimmer I am - but that helped me not freak out later on this year swimming a nasty section.
 
For anyone taking it it might be helpful to brush up on knots beforehand so you can concentrate on more of the mechanics when it comes to Z drags, that kind of thing, this site linked to from the Wave Trek Rescue site shows animations of how to do various knots, there's an iPhone app too:

just off the top of my head, here's what I find most essential:
 
-The Bowline. (and Bowline on a bight)
-Double Fisherman's (for tying prusiks)
-The Half hitch, trucker's hitch, ect
-The figure Eight series
 
I like the Butterfly knot, some don't. It's not listed on there.
 
I find those knots are really all I ever need.
A  Double Sheet Bend is good for tying two lines of disimilar diameters, and the Klemhiest knot is just f**king cool as sh*t.

Glad you guys found the knot tying link helpful!  Molumnekid, I'm glad JP listed the important ones because I actually practiced none of the knots before the class, but I wish I had.  The Z drag stuff got pretty in depth and if you don't get the physics stuff very easily, between the knots and drag systems you could end up being like me and spending that part of the class staring at pulley setups 'with all of the comprehension of a seagull staring at the Space Shuttle', as Dave Barry puts it. ;)  If I had gotten the knots under control first I could have concentrated more on the mechanics of the drag system stuff.

I signed up- who else is going? I am totally stroked. Irene- I've done glacier travel and crevasse rescue which is similar. But learning more than three knots at my advanced age is like trying to learn Spanish...a seemingly impossible task
