I've paddled it down to 800, but it is really boney in spots and quite a bit better over 900. Looks like there will be plenty of water this weekend. I probably will be busy one of the days but I'm hoping to get on tum the other.

Oh and I think that this past weekend was the lowest I've run it, maybe once around 1150 or so but about the same level. But people were saying it can be scraped down as low as 700 or 800,

Aww... I'm jealous Blair! I wish I felt ready to join you guys on TumTum .

For you experienced folks, what would you recommend I feel comfortable with, before jumping on Tum? My current thought: wait until I can run BD every which way, comfortably, before I jumping on Tum. What do you think? Also, what is a good level to run Tum for the first time?

If you think you would be comfortable running 3 Boulder Drops stacked together at 3000cfs you should be go on Tumwater.  A good 1st time flow would be under 1250cfs.  With the exception of POW there is nothing much harder than BD/Ned's on Tumwater but you need to be prepared to run pourovovers/ledges similar to Ned's back to back.

For flows on Tumwater under 1500, feeling comfy in BD at 5-6k is a good benchmark. Other rivers to check out along the way are Pilchuck Creek, NF Sky when the main's around 15k, Middle Middle at 4-6k, Green around 3k, and have a solid roll. Playboat a lot. That means SURF and go into holes, not just run the river in a playboat. Playboating and creekin' are complimentary. Playboating teaches you how to roll without any hesitation (mainly from doing it so freakin much). Creekin gives you confidence and teaches you how to 'select' your strokes instead of just paddlin yer ass off. Do both and don't have a time limit on when you 'should' have it down. Throw out as many 'shoulds' as you can. That'll help make it fun, instead of 'keepin up with the Jacksons' or whoever. Know what I mean? I never thought (even after 5 years of boating) that I would be paddling the stuff I am now. I used to think the dudes on the Oregon Kayaking site were crazy and that it was crazy to 'need' to paddle class V all the time. Although, I loved looking at the pics and fantasizing about having the skill to get into those places. I guess what I'm really saying, and I can't emphasize it enough, is that kayaking is at least as much a mental sport as it is a physical one. Sure technique is required, but you really only need to be so strong and so agile, the rest gets sorted out in your headspace. Playboating helps with that. Good luck, hope this helps...

BD is is definitely good practice for stepping it up. Try all the lines and boof the holes on the rest of the run. When you're comfortable, start boofing the stuff that you would regularly avoid in BD as well. Boofing lunch hole also is a confidence builder too. Also, throw yourself into Anderson hole and practice side surfing in your creekboat. I feel comfortable in BD so I felt I wanted to step it up. I've done BD 20 times now. Come out on friday Gwendolyn! Haven't seen you on the water in ages.

Exactly my thought! If you pull up to lunch hole thinking you're gonna screw it up and get sucked in, you probably will. Just like lifting heavy weights, vision that bar coming up off your chest and it will. Don't vision what bad will come. Another reason you avoid carnage talk before you run something like Tum for the first time.

I can meet up on Friday as early as you guys want, and I'd be down for Sky or Tumwater, whatever we're all feeling..

I certainly need to work on my playboating skills (and all skills for that matter) so I'm definitely down for Sky and maybe a Tum run after??

What? Carnage is the best part. You guys have it all wrong.

Sweet! Thanks all for your input, it's greatly appreciated! Sounds like I'm on the right track then! Been running BD in my playboat for a while now, but I need to start running laps on it and taking say "Neds Needle" a few times. Sounds like fun!!

Depending on the time you plan to meet on Friday, I may or may not be able to join you. Blair-- keep me posted with the time you're planning on going. I might be able to go sometime this weekend, too. I swear we'll paddle again soon!! Although you'll have to drop back down to BD for a while... Nah, I'd run Tum if I could too

Oh, and I completely agree that this sport is at least as much mental as it is physical skill. I might even go as far to say that it's 90% mental; 10% skill. I mean, you've got to be crazy enough to even want to run class V, right? *HAHA*

Brett-- thanks for the input. Your advise is always helpful!

Hey Blair, I'm in for Friday Sky at 1 pm, let me know if anything changes.  Will shoot for Tum on Sunday, hope it pans out!

Gwendolyn, are you boating Friday?  I might be up for 2 laps on BD, nice level for Neds right now.  But I haven't been on the river in 10 days, could end up starring in my own personal carnage asada. ;)  When in doubt follow Blair, just not the upside down part.
It's all fun and games until someone loses a paddle.
