Ran the ohane today with Jared and my dad, 600 or so on the Cowlitz, can't wait to go back with more water.

No doubt. If It wasn't for my dad, to this day I probably still wouldn't even know what "whitewater kayaking" was. It's hands down the greatest gift he has given me by far, the affects of which are felt throughout an entire lifetime.
I'm still not dialed into the Ohanie's flows:
How was 600? Elf low or just low? Bony?
I generally like running most runs in the medium to medium-high range (or higher).

You'd call it ELF low...
Also note, that this time of the year it is higher than the gauge makes it look because its all coming from snowmelt and the Muddy Fork is also in the gauge.
In Spring when there's rain and not so much snow it there is less water than the gauge may make it seem.

Thanks Travis- I know you like that run and have done it a bunch. Next time it's up in a more medium range get a hold of me if you want, and we'll do a trip.

it was definitely low, I would not run it any lower, or even at that flow again, I totally f'ed up my line at petrified and went right into the hole you don't want to go into, but I went right through it, so holes were not a problem. a couple of the boulder gardens were manky, one jared (who was in a playboat) got flipped in due to the quick maneuver needed to not get stern pinned. I want to go back at like 1000 or so.
Travis, did you and bryan run the upper section above secret campground?

Not last time, it's been a while since I could convince anybody that the portages would be worth it.
It's a real shame since that upper section used to be awesome, the wood has made the pain/pleasure ratio a close call.
I'd say at 1000 it would be worth the exercise. The Ohane is one of my favorite places to be.

Hoffstadt is on my list. I missed out when my crew went in there last year. Forget what I was doing.
I'm not gonna hold my breath for it any time soon, though. But who knows?

Do you think that's enough water though to bring Hoffstadt in?
PM me if you got any beta you wanna share on what flows to look for on the Toutle, or just post it up. That would make for a sweet PFD in Febuary if the weather was so kind- maybe on the way down to Hood R. or something.

Ran the Ohane again yesterday, similar video... the hole above ohane falls is sticky!!!! I was glad it didn't get me! also, I know why elbow room got its name, even with elbow pads I have a big bruise.

Sweet video. I love that river!
Looks like a decent flow, It looks similar to 1000 last July.
I pitoned on the same little rock at Petrified. That sneak is awesome, its just tough to get your bow up on that move.

definately one of my new favorite rivers, somethime this spring I'd like to get a double run on it, that hike out at the end kinda sucks, but it's well worth it.

Yeah, not much of a hike in the summer. The parking lot is about 100ft from the river.
We'll have to keep in touch. I plan on spending a lot of time on the ohane this summer.

yeah, I ended up hiking out to the road 1/2 mile down from the turn out at la wis wis, so I hiked like 1 1/2 miles instead of 1/2. it sucked. do you boat with the olympia crew?

From looking at google earth, it seems that you could paddle another mile downstream below the normal take-out and get out where the river is only a little more than 100 yards from hwy 12. There is even a bridge over the Ohanny about 1.25 miles down, just before the Muddy Fork confluence. Anybody tried taking out lower? It seems like a mile of flatwater would beat hiking up that hill.

I ended up hiking up that creek, it's really f**king steep, although there is a well defined trail. hiking up the road isn't bad at all. also, there's no where to pull out off Hwy 12 to load boats up. figure out how to get out of the campground the right way, don't just blindly hike uphill like I did.

I've heard of people taking out down there. Sounds like a good plan to me. I'd paddle flat water over carrying my boat any day. I'm like Mr. Bennett, I prefer to paddle from 1 bridge to the next.  No Kiwi, I'm in Seattle. I hiked into the Petrified canyon last Jan. and was truly inspired by what I saw. I made a commitment to myself that I would return to that spot via the river. I honestly didn't think it'd be the following July, but my paddling buddy, who was living in Morten convinced me that I'd be alright, and we ended up getting 5 runs in over 2 weekends. Stoked.

-yeah, Kiwi- looks like you had a healthier flow than last time. I'd boat that flow. Looks good. Nice Vid. I love that song btw, always have. Now I know who composed it.
- the spout falls (inside front cover of Bennett Book--the one you said has a sticky hole above it): I like to come down the nice smooth green ramp just to R. Right of the hole (you can see it in your vid), hook the eddy currents that curl around the back of the pile, and slingshot over toward the spout. A classic slalom "s-turn", you could say. Requires a little more precision and finesse, but it keeps your head dry and maintains your forward momentum. And it feels good, too.
I need to get on that run again.

And if you miss you could be treated to a wonderful hole working! I've seen some doozies there! Haven't seen anybody swim over the top yet but very close!  A note to anybody that goes that way for the first time: have a really really good look, then look again at how far left you need to get. Most folks aiming that way seem to hit the hole dead center. If you wind up there you should be thinking about going forward instead of still trying for the right. I'm not sure how many times but more than once I've seen people bait that hole sideways. The resulting carnage us usually fabulous.
